Day of Caring Volunteer Information

Welcome to the Day of Caring
Volunteer Information Page

This year, due to COVID-19, Day of Caring will look a little different.  Our #1 priority is the safety of our volunteers, agency staff and their clients.  As Virginia moves into Phase 3, we are keeping an optimistic outlook while planning this event but have erred on the side of caution with the conditions this fall remaining unknown.  We will communicate with you any changes that arise. After months of quarantine and isolation, we are looking forward to coming together and doing good in our communities.

Main Changes for Day of Caring 2020:

  • This year, instead of our traditional kick off breakfast we will be hosting our FIRST EVER (very exciting) combined area Day of Caring kick off and United Way Campaign Kickoff in the form of a centrally located Drive-Thru Parade.  We will invite Day of Caring Agencies and United Way Partner Agencies to line the parade route as volunteers and community partners drive-thru.  We hope that volunteers that do not feel comfortable participating this year will still come out for this celebration. Details coming soon!
  • United Way is asking that all projects limited to the number of volunteers that the agency can safely congregate with the CDC Guidelines in mind.
    • Agencies are permitted to post multiple projects on multiple days to make it easier, however, Friday, September 18th is the preferred day.
  • All Agencies and Volunteers must comply with CDC Guidelines at the time of the project.
  • All volunteers will be provided a waiver that must be signed prior to volunteering (may be filled out the day of service- please ask the agency you are volunteering with for their specific process).
  • Due to the effects COVID-19 has had on our local businesses, United Way and the Day of Caring committees decided not to request sponsors for this year.  Instead, we will continue to thank our generous sponsors and food donors that supported Day of Caring last year when businesses were healthy. When you are conducting business in the community, please consider supporting the companies that support local events and organizations.
    • What does not having sponsors or food donors this year mean?
      • The main result of this decision will be that Day of Caring shirts will not be provided to volunteers this year.  Participants will be provided with a link to purchase a shirt(s) through a local shirt vendor if they would like to do so.
      • United Way will not have the budget to assist agencies with funding for projects or snacks.
      • The Day of Caring Photo Contest will be cancelled this year but we hope you still send your photos to dayofcaring@uwvp.org so we can share your fun and success with others on social media and marketing materials.

If you have any questions, feedback, or concerns please reach out to Katie Schubert- KSchubert@uwvp.org
