Who We Serve

United Way of the Virginia Peninsula (UWVP) fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community. UWVP proudly serves: Gloucester, Hampton, James City County, Mathews, New Kent, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and York County. We connect businesses, local nonprofits, and social service agencies to address our community's most pressing needs. Our partner agencies work together to address the Virginia Peninsula's complex issues surrounding poverty, and provide impactful programs and services necessary to lifting our neighbors in need out of poverty. Our partners invest more than just money. Their ideas, volunteer power, in-kind support, and skills are helping make our community a better place to live, work, and play.

UWVP supports our nonprofit partners who have the programs and resources needed to assist ALICE. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, yet Employed. These are our friends and neighbors who are working hard - usually 2 or more jobs - yet still struggling to make ends meet. ALICE households make “too much” to qualify for government assistance, but too little to make ends meet. ALICE is one incident away from not being able to feed their family or pay their bills. When these individuals need help, they often have to navigate multiple phone numbers and websites to obtain the assistance they need. This is where United Way comes in - to bridge gaps in resources, and create solutions that lift ALICE out of poverty.
