Savannah's Story

Savs

In 2018 after the sudden death of our board member, Dr. Mel Shelby, the Samaritan Group established a nursing scholarship in his honor through Rappahannock Community College (RCC) Nursing Program. Rappahannock Community College is one of the top leading schools for Nursing Students in Virginia. In 2018 we initiated contact with the school to develop a nursing scholarship and started with one (1) scholarship of $1000.00 and have now added an additional $1000.00 scholarship. The faculty and staff of RCC choose the recipients based on our guidelines, one in the spring and one in the fall. Savannah Bryant was one of the recipients for a scholarship in May of 2019 and graduated in May 2020. She is currently working in her field of nursing at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Hospital. She states in her thank you letter that “all three of my brothers are on the autism spectrum, the youngest being the lowest functioning, he is the who smiles the brightest. There is something spiritual about seeing a child struggle and being able to be the one to be the guide they need”. She further states she is to be a new mom soon and looks forward to parenting her child and using her nursing skills and “mothering” skills to help children, working in a pediatric ward.
