United Way Sponsors Annual Day of Caring - 09/08/06

Using the theme, 'Caring Community Under Construction,' United Way kicked off its 14th Annual Day of Caring event on Friday, September 8th. Day of Caring is the largest single-day volunteer effort for the Virginia Peninsula and this year more than 870 individuals from local businesses and military installations rolled up their sleeves to help improve conditions at area non-profit agencies.

Volunteers worked at more than 50 projects including United Way partner agencies, local schools, and other non-profits, completing tasks such as landscaping, painting, building, disaster training, delivering meals to the elderly and replacing smoke alarms and exit lights.

The Annual Day of Caring is about neighbor helping neighbor and emphasis placed on providing assistance on high impact projects resulting in long term positive change for our community. Non-profit agencies rely heavily on the power of Day of Caring volunteers to help accomplish tasks that would otherwise probably not be completed due to budgetary constraints.

More than 48 local organizations showcased their corporate social responsibility by allowing employees to take a “day off” to work in volunteer service to the community.

Corporate sponsors for this year’s event included Wal-Mart, Pembroke Construction, Jason’s Deli, and Farm Fresh, who provided project supplies and food for volunteers.

The United Way Day of Caring is managed and coordinated each year by The Volunteer Center of the Virginia Peninsula.
