The Arc of the Virginia Peninsula has been providing quality services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their family members since 1953. The Arc has grown tremendously through the years and currently serves more than 1,600 individuals annually in early childhood, community living, day support, and employment programs.
The Arc’s mission is “To assist people with intellectual and other disabilities in choosing goals and leading satisfying lives.” Services in support of this mission range from providing developmental therapies for children to helping elderly caregivers plan for the future of their aging loved ones. The Arc’s service area includes Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson and York County, as well as the 10 rural counties on the Middle Peninsula/ Northern Neck served by The Arc’s Lewis B. Puller Center.
The Arc is a major service provider for individuals with disabilities, but is also a major business and employer in the community. More than 550 individuals with disabilities participate in The Arc’s four employment programs and earn an average of $4.7 million in wages each year. The average hourly wage for these employees is $9.60 an hour, while some individuals earn as much as $18.50 an hour. |
